DENTAL HYGIENE PROPHYLAXIS

Commonly referred to as a “cleaning,” there are three types available: scaling, scaling and root debridement, or periodontal maintenance. A patient’s oral health status informs what dental hygiene treatment is selected. For reference, scaling is a basic dental hygiene visit typically for healthy individuals who receive routine dental care. Root debridement, commonly referred to as a “deep cleaning," aims to combat gum disease (i.e., bone loss) by removing deposits further below the gumline and may be needed if several appointments have been missed. Periodontal maintenance is the kind of dental hygiene visit that happens after a deep cleaning to maintain health.
